Desperation of the Opposition

You may recall my previous post titled Hjelle - Confused about Who is Running. The main theme for that post was that the "majority" will do or say anything to get elected. You may recall that Erik had sent an email to a resident which contained many false statements about me. He managed some how to conclude that the reason that Lions Park was not being improved was because the fire and police protection around his home was not adequate. That was however just the start of the effort by the "majority" and their gang in this campaign to deceive the voters.

Before the primary Mr. Bartol decided to send out a mailing containing several half truths about me and throwing his support to Delray Rokke ( I assume that both of his supporters did just that). The main assertion was that I had voted against the budget that added new police and firefighters for the city. He of course failed to mention that this was the same budget that raised the city levy to 10.2% making it the second largest increase in the last ten years. It was also the same budget that reorganized the city staff. Maplewood has currently paid out over $500,000 in lawsuit settlements to employees who were fired in an inappropriate manner, and there are more lawsuits out there. I would vote against it again given the chance.

Then they started a postcard smear effort. The first card came out before the primary and was recently discussed in an article by City Pages. I don't think that they thought the whole thing through however, because the card compared me with Paul Wellstone and several other liberal leaders. Think about it. All the current elected officials that represent Maplewood are Democrats and Maplewood has almost always voted DFL in state and national elections. So to tell all those Democrats that Paul Wellstone is my role model most likely was not going to convince them not to vote for me. The primary results would tend to bear out that fact.

They seem to have figured it out by the second postcard however. It is amazing that without blinking an eye that they could change me from a way left leaning Democrat to a big spending Republican in just two weeks. The card did have a hint of truth, in that it indicated that you should support John Nephew and Delray Rokke because they are Democrats. Rocky I assume does consider himself a Democrat. After all he did seek the DFL endorsement. The Democrats must have not been all that impressed though because while John Nephew and I received over 70% of the votes of the DFL delegates. Mr. Rokke got 12%. This was the result even though I was not even at the convention but was in the BWCA
.
They say I am raising taxes. I expected this when I wrote Rebecca's Debacle. The facts are I voted against the 2007 10.2% levy increase, Rebecca voted for it. There will be no increase this year (whether that is good or bad is yet to be determined) so how can I insist on raising taxes?

They say I support wealthy developers over citizens. The largest development we have considered lately that has major impacts on citizens is in Gladstone. Rebecca voted for it, I voted against.

Multi- national corporations? All that I can think of is 3M and I have not even bought a roll of tape recently.

Let's review so far: they first attempt to appeal to their conservative base and say Will is a liberal so don't vote for him, then they decide that it might work better to try to convince the people that gave me their endorsement that their memory is fading and it was really Rocky that they endorsed. Good luck with that.

Now they have sent out the latest card.

As you can see they are still working the "even though you endorsed Will you should vote for Rocky "angle. The new twist is to bring back a trick from the last election. That is to try to convince you that I want to sell off all the park and open space land in the city and develop it. They will at some point also try to convince you that I somehow make a profit if that occurred. So once again I'll tell you that I own a remodeling company, Rossbach Construction. New development does nothing for us. We need older homes that need repair or upgrades. If I was trying to use the city to help my company I would be advocating low interest loans for the upkeep of our housing stock. If you get the chance ask Rebecca or Rocky when is it that I have voted to sell open space. They will not have an answer. They might say that I was willing to discuss it as an option during the Gladstone project. They would be correct. I believe that as a council person I need to understand all the options that are brought forward in debate. The "majority" does not like to consider all angles, they prefer to just do what they want ( their city manager, their reorganization, their conservation easements).

I started out with the "majority" will say and do anything to get themselves elected. It reminds me of the old joke, " How do you know when a lawyer is lying?" Answer, Their mouth is moving.

One final note. It is too bad that Delray has gotten himself tied up with this. I personally feel that Rocky is a good person at heart. But by standing back and not speaking out against this type of smear campaign, I'm afraid that he is completing his transition to the dark side.

  1. Your statement is not true Mr. Rossback, if Ramsey County decides to assess a 10.2% property tax increase what do you do? Rebecca and the other members who voted "no" to raising taxes in 2007 and 2008 can't control what Ramsey County does. They are raising the property taxes 3% this year when the housing market is declining to the lowest point in the last 5 years and foreclosure rates are up. You use creative word play to make it look like you are an advocate of the people,

You voted "no" to a lowering our taxes, again "yes" and "no" are simple questions my children could answer. "Black and white" not gray like you try to portray in your comments and commentary. You voted "NO" to lowering the citizens of Maplewoods Taxes Mr. Rossbach, both you and Ms. Juneman voted "NO"........when the rest of majority voted "yes" to saving families and the elderly and the hard working tax payers of our community some of there hard earned money...thank you Mr. Hjelle,Ms. Cave and Major Longrie for your continued efforts to look out for our best interests and what is best for our community.

Mr. Rossbach, another old joke "You made your bed, now sleep in it" You voted "no" to lowering taxes, seems like your creative saying applies to your also, point the finger back at yourself and not toward everyone else.

  3. Do they pay you, fire and brimstone? Mr. Rossbach has reasonably addressed every one of your arguments. Please go back and read his posts so you can come up with new arguments and not rehash the same old ones. I suppose they have not given you your notes on the next batch of arguments, yet. You are getting very tiresome!

  4. Mary Flister,,,,,, My apologies for not passing on praises and "ata boys" . If you have an open forum for discussion people are going to have different opinions. Maybe you can answer my questions:

How do you feel about Mr. Nephew and his business that sells materials of an adult nature to young adults and children? Card games that talk about killing, dismembering, beating up people, killing family members for fun?

Are you for this type of material and selling things to youth and young adults that is inappropriate and promotes violence in our youth?

Mr. Rossbach has aligned himself with Mr. Nephew as his running mate from the signs you see around town. Apparently he does not question him or his values. Take a look Mr. Nephews company information and review the facts.

  5. Bear in mind that Fire and Brimstone's original username was FireFighterCave. Recall that George Cave, Rebecca's husband, is a pay-per-call firefighter. I do not think he gets paid directly, but I do not think he is a disinterested 3rd party.

  6. Fireboy:

Your rhetoric is getting old. You keep blathering the same stream of vomit.

I can hear even more vomit coming next year when the city (without your beloved godess Rebecca) is in a bit of a financial crisis due the short-sightedness of you and your tax saving friends. I'm sure it will be Will's fault, even though he voted against shorting the city of much needed funds. You gotta cover what you promised to spend. Rebecca and friends have decided they don't need to.

As for Nephew's games, I get the sense that you are afraid of a little bit of fantasy. I'm not sure why that would be, considering your friends have been living in a fantasy world for some time.

Hurry on now Fireboy. I think you have a hose to attend to.

This is all a huge fabricated campaign ploy created by Will and Jon Nephew. AN OLD WELLSTONE TACTIC, nice try.

Rossbach and John Newphew. Nice try you to, this is an old "Wellstone" tactic, John did pick up something when he worked on his campaign.

To non-fire-guy or what ever you call your name. You are an angry little man woman not sure. Therapy and Prozac are a good thing to look into.

GO NOW AND PREPARE FOR THE MOTHER SHIP TO COME AND GET YOU,

  9. Fire and Brimstone, your namecalling and smear tactics only show what a small mind you have. Intelligent people don't have to resort to those things. They can make up an argument on facts. I really don't think you are doing yourself or the "majority" any favors by your comments. It only reinforces what we already know about them. You may want to tone it down a little if you want to woo people to your side.

  10. Thank you for your comments Mary Flister, just pointing out the odvious. It was a creative idea you and your friends had to run a negative ad campaign created by your group to sway or steer voters. You seriously can't stand change, good or bad if you aren't controlling it.

  11. Fireboy!

Keep the green stream coming from the hole above your chin.

I'm not sure I have seen any negative ads. I know I have seen a number of undeniable facts. Erik reads from a prepared statement at 2am with virtually no one around. Rebecca votes for someone who doesn't have nearly the qualifications that her buddy Erik has put forth himself. Rebecca misleading the public about endorsements. Rebecca pretending she cares about parks and open space while at the same time voting to gut the parks deparment.

Seems to me Fireboy, that your group has created their own negativity by not living true.

    Good luck Fireboy.

  13. Maplewood Voters
Please act now to prevent the shameful election of John Nephew to the Maplewood city council.

Our city council is about to have a member who makes his living publishing and marketing and selling a game called Let's Kill: A Pretty Corpse based on kid-art drawings of violence against women and others.

  14. Hello secret person who is probably a sock puppet of Cave, Hjelle and Longrie. I'm guessing you're not George "firefightercave" aka "fireandbrimstone", since your spelling and grammar are better.

Are you familiar with the idea of a "game"? Did you perhaps ever engage in playing Cowboys and Indians as a child? John Nephew's company makes a lot of games. Some of them are educational games aimed at kids, some are aimed at adults. I know I can tell the difference between them, like most grownups. Can you?

  15. In response to smiley face person.

Yes! We must act NOW to reelect a woman who has been found in a court of law to have lied about her endorsements, who lied under oath to that court in an effort to excuse it, and who lied to the newspaper about her education, and who knows what else. That's far less shameful than someone who published a card game that some anonymous stranger tells us is scary!

  16. What happened to you Fireboy?

Choking on the $2000 worth of fines?

I suppose those are the fault of Will and John too.

  17. Is there any chance that if I asked everyone to tone it down a bit that you would? I really appreciate all of you that are willing to defend me or my positions .I even don't mind the comments of those who have different opinions , but it is my blog and I would appreciate it if you would limit your comments to the topic of the post. Please do not create a running commentary on issues outside the topic at hand.

  18. nofirefightergods and Kevin and Will Rossbach:

You should sleep great knowing you took a $1000 dollars used to feed children, you should sleep great knowing the petty, self created crap you created and fabricated with your Maplewood Voters Coalition-comprised of you and all your friends... children to go hungry in Maplewood tonight.

I voted "no" to lowering taxes for the citizens of Maplewood. Thank you again for the reminder of a vote for Will is a vote against family, community and will cost you and your family your hard earned dollars due to his own personal agenda.

  19. If Rebecca's children go hungry, it is only her own fault. There are rules and regulations for a reason.

  20. I would like to applologize to all the families, and friends of the fire and police officers of our cities who have had their Fire and Police for Rebecca Cave signs stolen from their yards. Basic liberties we all are entitled too to express our free will to choose. Very sad and disheartening when people have to revert to stooping so low as to steel something from someones own yard, you and your campaign have proven you can't go any lower. Sorry citizens of Maplewood for the ignorance of the Rossbach/Nephew campaign and there faithfull

  21. I agree with :) about yard signs. It is indeed unfortunate that people steal signs. It is also strange that they think that doing so will change the out come of an election. For the record at the council meeting at the end of Sept. Rebecca and I compared notes She had lost less than 1/2 the signs that have gone missing for my campaign.

  23. Guess what the signs were stolen during Homecomming week. About 20 of them ended up in my friends yard in NSP. Yours are the only election around hense the only signs for the kids to steal. Get over it. Both sides.
